Our organisation

Established in 2004, Eurothon is the socio-professional organisation of the European Tropical Tuna Fishing and Processing Industry. It brings together under one umbrella all Tropical Tuna European fleets and tuna processing actors. Our members are active in Europe, Africa (ACP-Africa) and Latin America. Their fishing activities take place in the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans.

Our members have come together to share their decades long expertise of tuna fishing, processing and trading in order to ensure the sustainability of the European tuna industry on the European and global scenes. Their collective objective is to ensure that ambitious and realistic sustainability and transparency standards are applied to the European Tuna industry and promoted in the international arena.

To this end, Eurothon is the voice of the European tuna sector through dialogue and partnership with European policy makers, regional and global bodies in charge of tuna fisheries management worldwide.

At EU level, Eurothon is actively involved in all consultation processes related to:

  • EU Trade agreements and international trade negotiations
  • Sustainable fisheries partnership agreements (SFPAs) negotiations between the EU and the countries we work in
  • The development of EU regulations aiming at increasing the sustainability of our sector
  • The development of EU phytosanitary regulations in order to guarantee European consumers are provided with the highest possible quality tuna

At global level, we are active in all the Tuna Commissions of the 4 Regional Fisheries Management Organisations (RFMOs)1 tasked with the management of tuna fishing in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans.

Our President is Mr. Juan Manuel Vieites Baptista de Sousa and our Secretary General is Mr. Pierre Commère.
